Our mini-tour through a select few B.C. (British Columbia) wineries continues with Cedar Creek Estate Winery. Their main property is located just south of Kelowna, with a fantastic view looking west onto Lake Okanagan. As with most of the antecedent wineries of the area, Cedar Creek started somewhat slowly, producing “table wines” in the early 1990s. With good direction and leadership, they rapidly blossomed into the winery they are today, producing world class wines from four vineyards throughout the valley.
Cedar Creek’s premium line of wines, the Platinum series, is known for its consistent quality. I am partial to the Platinum Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The 2008 Platinum Chardonnay is especially good, with just enough oak to give it depth and power without drowning out the flavour of the fruit.
One cannot speak of Cedar Creek without mentioning their always excellent Ehrenfelser. Definitely my favourite wine from Cedar Creek, it greatly outshines other Ehrenfelsers of the area. Appropriate for drinking any time of the year, it is especially good on a hot patio in the summertime. With rich flavours of peaches, citrus and passion fruit, this slightly sweet nectar never seems to last in my cellar very long. Unfortunately, due to high demand and a very affordable price, it is becoming increasingly harder to find but is always available direct from the Winery (at least early in the season).
I will definitely be taking a closer inspection of some of their wines in the near future, along with a look at the Cedar Creek sister property of Greata Ranch which produces several very nice wines of their own.
Such a beautiful property! I was truly blown away by the view of Lake Okanagan. A friend of mine was married on the Cedar Creek grounds and it was the perfect location for a summer wedding. We took the official winery tour and it was very educational. The wine tasting room also boasts quite a nice selection of cookbooks and other accompaniments. If you are in Kelowna, Cedar Creek Estate Winery is a must see!
