Leaving the deep south (of the Okanagan) we head north to eventually find ourselves in the little wine mecca of Summerland. Not too far from Greata Ranch, this town’s wine area is known as Bottleneck Drive. Leaving the lower bench behind, most of the wineries in this area are up in the hills. Luckily, the narrow, winding roads are well marked, allowing one to find Dirty Laundry Winery with relatively little backtracking.
Although playing a little too heavily on the “bordello” history of the site, the atmosphere at Dirty Laundry is decidedly unique. They are currently in the process of renovating and expanding the facilities for 2011, but have promised to keep both the current feel and beautiful vine draped patio. The cool, sun-dappled patio (complete with mist jets for the hot days) is definitely one of the best places in the valley to enjoy a packed lunch and a refreshing bottle of white wine.
And whites are where Dirty Laundry excels. Although they are now splitting their focus and offering a selection of decent reds, the terrior of the surrounding vineyards seems to favor all manner of white wine grapes. With a great Pinot Gris, several Gewurztraminers, two Chardonnays and a Riesling, they have something for any palate at a very reasonable price. I recall the Pinot Gris being especially nice on a hot summer day. They also produce a rosé (made from an interesting blend of grapes) that has been quite well received. I have not had the opportunity to judge it for myself, bit I look forward to trying it this spring or summer.
Me and Rhys LOVE the Madam’s Vines. Their white’s are fantastic.
